ARTIST’S STATEMENT

“It was in my seventh grade art class at Tivoli Gardens Comprehensive School in Kingston, Jamaica, that I was suddenly challenged by the instructor with ‘George Walker, what is art?’ Cautiously, I answered, ‘Art is a painting, a drawing, a sculpture.’ Without acknowledging my response, the instructor stated emphatically, ‘Art is representing a thing with skill and ability whether the thing is beautiful or ugly.’

I have never forgotten that statement or indeed that instructor. His response redefined my perception of art and catapulted my consciousness into a state of newfound freedom and personal exploration.

In today’s world of art, where art is purely subjective and highly adulterated with techniques that personify lackadaisical disciplines, I feel inspired to create works of art that touches the soul.

I have developed a profound use of color that conveys a sophisticated level of emotions that is inherent in all living things. This allows me to move between different levels of consciousness. Now, my ongoing expectation of myself and my art is to enlighten and stimulate the mind, to excite the senses, and to reveal the beauty of the soul. If I have accomplished even a part of this, I have at last begun to achieve my goal. Yet, I know it is only the beginning.”
