ARTIST’S STATEMENT

PULP: magazines and books from the thirties and forties printed on cheap paper, usually referring to those containing crime or detective stories.

CORE: the central or most important part of.

“As a child, while all my friends were reading superhero books, I was hooked on the infamous EC line of Comics from the fifties. They were filled with great art and sensational titles like "Shock Suspenstories" and "Vault of Horror." Since then I've been drawn aesthetically to the style of an earlier time. Whether in film, art, or fiction, the era between 1930 and 1955 speaks to me. Especially the "Noir" genre with its seedy urban backdrops, shadowy figures in fedoras, and hard boiled slang. Although sometimes I approach it with humor, I believe the overall mood created with black and white imagery cuts to the core of raw instinct and emotion. "PULPCORE" stars B-movie actors, boxers, con-men, pin-ups, gumshoes, and jazz musicians on the junk.
