ARTIST’S STATEMENT

“I adore silk. Even touching it brings me boundless joy. The cloth makes me work instantly, in one poetic rapture. One should be honest and noble to work with it – and then it pays back with spiritual clarity of color…

When I paint, color is like a friend to me. It is real and connects with my feelings. I start with music and the first lines I put on silk are what decides what will happen. I work spontaneously without a predetermined plan with each element of a painting flowing from the previous one. It is like water or creative energy flowing through me onto the silk.

Making these tapestries is a different expression of my creativity. One day in a museum I was amazed by the Coptic tapestry and fell in love with this miniature textile form and found myself unable to stop trying to experiment with this art form. By working with silk thread, I found I could make them smaller and smaller. My tapestry expresses for me a kind of distillation of our world, eliminating the nonessential parts of an idea.

I use a small wooden frame wrapped with thread. Then I weave with needles carrying different colors. Because it is done with silk thread instead of yarn, it takes months of intense, focused work to produce each piece.”
