PROFILE

Martha Gilman Roach, a second-generation native of San Diego, began a lifetime of art about age three. Born into a large family in Bonita, California, she grew up surrounded by three generations of artists and craftsmen. In this creative environment, she mastered a variety of art forms including sculpture and ceramics, weaving and textiles, photography, jewelry, printmaking, and apparel design and construction. But painting became the enduring focus, providing the most potential for full expression and adventure.

She received a Bachelor of Arts Degree from University of California at Los Angeles in 1971 and went on to a number of painting courses at the Art Center College of Design in Pasadena.

She is currently painting on location, "in plein air", at various natural locations around the San Diego area, catching the scenes in the most interesting light and mood. Following the example of the California Impressionists of the early twentieth century, she edits reality to emphasize the most interesting part of a scene, and uses natural light in all its transparency and reflection to create mood and depth. She is creating a body of work expressing her love of light, color, and texture in a loose, yet representational style.

Martha has exhibited widely in juried shows and galleries throughout the U.S.A., won awards, and her work is featured in several prominent collections. She is a member of the San Diego Museum of Art Artists Guild, the California Art Club: San Diego Regional Chapter, and the Laguna Plein Air Painters Association.

     Martha recently passed away.
