ARTIST’S
STATEMENT
“The experience
is an important element in my painting: the experience of inspiration,
the experience of the painting process as well as the experience I
offer for viewer response. Working in acrylics, watercolor, and oils,
I paint with intensity and energy, producing approximately 50 paintings
each year, many of which are shown in regional and local exhibitions.
I have also exhibited in Europe, South America – in the Amazon jungle,
and in Lyon, France, where I had my studio. My work is personal
and autobiographical. The experiences I have had and the places I
have lived influence my work as I paint the world I see around me.
I have been a French professor and hold a Ph.D. in Romance languages.
Interests in critical theory, foreign languages, and foreign cultures
surface on my canvas and influence my approach to subject matter. I work in watermedia,
executing large canvases in acrylics and smaller watercolors. I paint
with passion and energy to create visually exiting works that capture
the spirit and emotion of subject matter, varying from landscapes
and figures to still life. I often use familiar objects and human
artifacts to suggest an idea of a time, place, or person not in view.
A recent series on shoes and sushi reveals a playful and curious side
of existence. The spontaneity of paint application shows my energy
and vitality for the painting process. The quickness of brush strokes,
handwriting and gestural marking, characteristic of my work, help
me to preserve the personal experience of each painting.”
