ARTIST’S STATEMENT

“Central to my artistic vision is the self-image as a ‘global citizen’. With a genetic heritage that spans continents and includes European Gypsy and Native American indigenous people, I have continued my childhood experience of frequent moves to explore the vastness of the human family and it’s many creative cultures. Professional training as a Registered Nurse – ignoring early creative promptings – ultimately yielded to a full time dedication to the arts as a vehicle for expressing that which modern science was ill equipped to do.

The genius of all art… is its amazing ability to blend a decorative value with a capability for moving the viewer into the realms of the mysterious. I believe that we are all – ultimately One people sharing One home and the children of an awesome universe. Through the communicative values of art, I aspire to express this belief.

It is difficult for me to consider myself as ‘self-taught’. Contact with the human form through nursing practice, keen observation of life, and the abundant availability for the arts in books and galleries… are my teachers. My inspiration has evolved from the earlier works of Native Americans, the Celts, and European icons to a more recent style presented by the Pre-Raphaelites. The common appeal seems to be the vivid use of color along with texture and patterns – all presented in support of the message intended.

I work primarily with oil on mahogany panels or canvas. Added textures and gold leaf frequently appear in my works – in support of the image. a trompe l’oeil effect or an incorporated frame that interacts with the central image.

It has always been my aspiration to create images from which the viewers experience – first and foremost – a glimpse into themselves. To this extent, if ones first response, when approaching a piece bearing my signature – is to discover a dimension of themselves stirred by the image… then I will have been successful”.
