PROFILE

Born in Kenosha, Wisconsin, Mimi Levinson has been exhibiting her art since she graduated from Carnegie-Mellon University in Pittsburgh. An artist as well as an art educator, she is familiar with a wide range of materials. She has taught in Augusta, Georgia, Pittsburgh, Mesa College, and the Jewish Community Center here in San Diego. Her primary interest is hand-dyed textiles. A rich color sense gives her batiks and silk paintings a special depth and character.

Since moving to San Diego, she has concentrated on surface resistant techniques> Areas of fabric are blocked off with wax or gutta resist and the remaining parts are dyed. She achieves strong overlays of color and design with this complicated, time-consuming process.

Mimi has received numerous awards.  She works on commission for public and private collectors and has shown her art in both solo and group shows. In the past few years, her work has been included in exhibitions in Europe, Japan, Hawaii, New York, and in the San Francisco Bay area. Locally her work has been exhibited at the Artists Guild, the Allied Craftsmen Show, the San Diego Art Institute, and the San Diego Museum of Art. She is mentioned in Who’s Who in American Art, as well as in several other publications.

In 1986, she led a tour to India, with emphasis on textiles and arts. Her work is in the collection of the Delhi Handicrafts Museum and private institutions. Asia is one of her favorite travel destinations and inspirations.
