PROFILE

I have enjoyed drawing since childhood and also grew up in the small southern California community (at that time) of Huntington Beach where I had the freedom to roam from the beach to open fields. Exploring the world around my home as well as during the camping trips that normally constituted our annual family vacation I developed an unending interest in wildlife. I earned a Bachelor of Science degree in Biology from San Diego State University and entered a career in marine science. I did some pen and ink drawings of wildlife and graphite drawings while in college before setting the art aside as I developed my career. I've always maintained my connection with the outdoors both through my career as a marine biologist and in various outdoor pursuits that have taken me all over the western United States.
Primarily a self-taught artist I have occasionally done drawings for friends over the years. Returning to my art after a long hiatus, I have honed my skills with classes, workshops and lots of painting. I am a signature member of the Worldwide Nature Artist Group, as well as a member of the Wildlife Artists Association and the San Diego Watercolor Society.
In my paintings I try to depict animals and their environment realistically, whether it be a sporting dog working in the field, a bobcat in the desert, a cow horse and rider doing their job, or elk in the mountains. As a professional biologist I am alarmed at the lack of basic biological knowledge in our increasingly urbanized society, which I feel contributes to the degradation of our land and oceans and hence the survival of wildlife. I hope that in some way, as an artist depicting wildlife, I can help to reestablish public interest and appreciation of our wildlife and it's habitat and promote their maintenance for future generations. Although art is to be enjoyed, it can also educate.
