ARTIST’S STATEMENT

“As an expressionist I use color to elicit an emotional response. I find there are two common reactions to my work; either the colors capture your attention and draw you in and lift your spirits, or immediately shying away from the works because you can’t process that amount of color! A jack Nicholson quote says; ‘You want truth? You can’t handle truth!’ I feel that it could be re-worded for my art. You want bright color? You can’t handle bright color! I personally revel in the colors and let them wash over me, bringing me to another place that doesn’t exist, at least not in reality. Either reaction to my paintings works for me, as I am getting an emotional response. To me that’s exactly what expressionism is supposed to do.”

PROFILE

Lisa studied art in advanced courses all through her academic life on the east coast. Attending Massachusetts College of Art in Boston, she learned much about Art History and adored anything the Dutch Masters produced. Leaning towards realism all her early works were just that, with brooding colors and sharp contrasts. The move to Southern California in 1982 changed everything. The colors here were brighter and the light more vibrant. Themes are always of architectural settings often with nature creeping in here and there, Currently, her newfound expressionism contains more of the colors and textures that represent her adopted western surrounding, intense and vibrant.
